This is a skillfully written book that describes the basic rules and grammar of heraldry observed in designing a heraldic device. As it is quite impossible for the genealogist to interpret a blazon or to design a coat of arms without full mastery of heraldic rules and grammar, this book provides all the information necessary for the prosecution of either task.

Carefully explaining the unique rules and language of heraldry, and illustrating each point with a remarkable series of pen drawings, the book aims to give the genealogist and the student of design sufficient information about the structure and detail of heraldic insignia to enable him to produce well-balanced designs of coats of arms.

In addition to its usefulness as a manual, this is the kind of book that many will enjoy for the color and romance of heraldic history; e.g., the stories behind the great symbols of chivalry and the explanation of the uses of heraldry in architecture and other forms of embellishment. It is an unquestionable necessity for anyone forming a heraldic library.

“Without a doubt this is the finest book to have been published for many years, and one which will become the vade mecum of anyone in any way connected with heraldry in its various forms.”–Museum News (Sept. 1967).

This is the 7th edition of the International Vital Records Handbook, a resource that is even more valuable today than it was when it was first published. Not only does it give persons needing certification of their own important life events the tools needed to obtain these certificates, it also gives genealogists and historians the location–both online and on-site–of vital records databases and indexes, as well as other resources that could help further their research.

At one time or another everyone needs copies of birth, marriage, civil union, divorce, death, or pre-adoption certificates for driver’s licenses, passports, jobs, Social Security, family history research, school enrollment, proof of citizenship, or simple proof of identity. But the fact is that the requirements and fees needed to obtain copies of vital records vary from state to state and from country to country, often requiring tedious research and wading through confusing websites of large agencies before the appropriate forms can be obtained and the correct procedures followed. The International Vital Records Handbook will put an end to all that, as it offers complete, up-to-date information on where and how to request vital records. It also includes copies of the application forms, where available, thus simplifying and speeding up the process by which vital records are obtained, regardless of the number or type of application forms required.

This edition contains

  • the latest application forms and ordering information for each of the fifty states and, where available, for the other countries of the world;
  • details about records that were created prior to statewide vital records registration;
  • information on which records are restricted and for how long, and whether “informational” or uncertified copies of records are available to genealogy researchers;
  • locations of vital records collections, online databases, and institutions of interest to genealogy researchers;
  • adoption search contact information and, where available, pre-adoption birth record and adoption search applications;
  • key addresses of repositories or embassies that might help you obtain copies of vital records in countries where neither a centralized vital records registration system nor a vital records application form is available.

Locating vital records and navigating your way through the various privacy laws and storage facilities can be difficult. The International Vital Records Handbook will make the process immeasurably easier.

Graphic artist and genealogist Tony Matthews’ latest book is a humdinger; it’s a collection of hand-drawn family trees created expressly for the scrapbook hobbyist. Tony believes that “Family Trees and Scrapbooking/Memory Albums are practically cousins,” and in this book he demonstrates how to bring the two together to produce a wonderfully decorative tree, using scrapbook techniques, whether you are an artist or not.

Memory Trees begins with suggestions for choosing the design of your family tree, using purely aesthetic considerations or one or more subject themes (births, careers, homes, geography, pets, cars, vacations, etc.) that are important to a particular family. With a design in mind and one of Tony’s layouts selected, the scrapbooker (a term meaning someone who makes scrapbooks) can choose from a myriad of beautiful papers, borders, stickers, stencils, clip-art, stamps, etc., etc. that are readily available. Matthews provides oodles of suggestions for embellishing the basic design, adding photographs of varying shapes and sizes, filling in names and dates, and generally putting a personal touch to the family tree. Tony has laid out each tree so that it can be enlarged to fit within a 10″ x 10″ border, the size most commonly used for scrapbook albums The layouts themselves range from hearts and flowers to shields and insects, from toys to crosses, and from landscapes to elephants. The creator can complete some of the trees from the outside in and others from the inside out. There’s a collection of borders to choose from, and many of the designs are suitable for child scrapbookers. In short, if your scrapbook is lacking a family tree, you’ll find that Memory Trees is an easy, convenient, and FUN tool for adding one.

Heritage World of County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, has surveyed the gravestone inscriptions for almost 900 cemeteries across the northern part of Ireland. The great majority of these cemeteries are located in Northern Ireland, although the figure includes a substantial number from two other Ulster counties, Donegal and Monaghan, as well as several from County Louth. The survey encompasses cemeteries of all religious denominations as well as those administered by local district and borough councils. In each case, there is an exact transcript of all gravestone inscriptions, together with a simple plan of the cemetery.

Information pertaining to these cemeteries can be acquired from Heritage World either as an index, giving county, parish, person, cemetery name, date of death, and denomination, or as a full gravestone inscription. These details can be supplied for any name in a particular cemetery, parish, or county.

This book lists all cemeteries surveyed to date by Heritage World. Arranged by county, all 900 cemeteries are listed by the civil parish in which they are located, together with their religious denomination. In brief, then, this is a guide to the 900 cemeteries surveyed in the nine counties of Antrim, Armagh, Derry, Donegal, Down, Fermanagh, Louth, Monaghan, and Tyrone, with pointers for the researcher to follow for acquiring full details of individual gravestone inscriptions.

These particular census records cover, at one period or another, Fort Maurepas, Biloxi, Mobile, Natchez, New Orleans, and other locations. The records are both civilian and military, mainly the former, and they extend from 1699 through 1732. Besides census records, the reader will find lists of 1,704 marriageable girls, a 1726 list of persons requesting negroes, landowner lists, and a list of persons massacred at Fort Rosalie in 1729. Other features include a synopsis of Louisiana’s colonial history, tips on French colonial naming practices, and a comprehensive index of 5,000 names.

A Genealogist’s Refresher Course is less a how-to book than a collection of first-hand experiences, do’s and don’ts, and privileged information. The author emphasized the importance of verifying our findings against the original (primary) sources, and not relying on secondary, or published, accounts as the foundation for our genealogies. One of the most valuable chapters in the book contains a list of nearly 100 different kinds of sources of genealogical information, including anniversary announcements, bank statements, business licenses, memorial cards, health records, medals, newspaper clippings, subpoenas, and many other record categories that genealogists may fail to consult. Still other chapters discuss how to acquire rare or used books and when and how to hire a professional genealogist. In a word, this is a unique genealogy refresher course! The second edition, besides incorporating corrections to the original work, features one new chapter on the records of lineage, hereditary, and other special organizations and a second on how to find used books crucial to your research.

Anyone who has had any success in researching their Welsh ancestry will know that a grasp of specialized Welsh genealogical methods and sources is only one of several factors that contributed to that success. They will know, for example, how important it is in Welsh research to have some understanding of the social, cultural, religious, and economic background of the communities in which those ancestors lived.

This book attempts to broaden that understanding, especially for the period prior to 1800 when most researchers begin to experience difficulties. In addition, it aims to make readers more aware of some little-known sources and the special uses that may be applied to the information found in these sources.

The book follows the format of the Rowlands’ highly successful Welsh Family History and is a compendium of contributions by experts in different fields. Both books have their origins in the residential courses in family history offered at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, since 1986, and, although there is some overlap in the time periods considered within the two books, there is virtually no duplication of content.

Apart from chapters dealing with aspects of community life, there are chapters relating to different occupations, surnames, old documents, maps, estate records, and family histories (the Vaughans of Trawsgoed, the Pugh family of Llanfair and Llanbedr, the Lloyds of Ty Newydd, Moris Reignald, Titus Jones, and “Baron” Lewis Owen). The book contains several case studies and is rounded off with examples of work done as part of the accreditation process on some more recent university courses. Other chapters cover Catholics in Wales, Urban Growth and Development, People in Mining and Metals, Bartrum’s Welsh Genealogies, Homes of Surnames, English Settlement in Montgomeryshire, and Religion and Society in 19th-century Wales.
