Since her retirement, trauma surgeon Dr. Kimberly Ormsby Nagy, MD, AG, has embraced genealogy and lineage societies as her “second career”.  She joined the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1980 and is today a member of 80 lineage organizations. She has served as an officer in a number of them, including in the role as Registrar, where she helped people prepare applications and evaluated other applications submitted for membership. Dr. Nagy has lectured on lineage societies to local, regional, and national organizations.

This guidebook is an outgrowth of Dr. Nagy’s decades of participation in lineage organizations. In the process she clears up some common misconceptions about them, like the impression of lineage societies as groups of little old ladies, sitting around in their fancy hats and drinking tea.  In fact, there is so much more to societies and their activities.

In essence, Dr. Nagy has written an A to Z guide to lineage societies. She begins with a description of what they have in common, what they aim to do, how to find the right society for yourself, and the various eligibility requirements. The next part of the book explains what’s involved in becoming a member. This entails a detailed treatment of the application process, including how and where to go about assembling the genealogical evidence for membership. Rounding out the volume are examples of the social, cultural, and patriotic activities undertaken by lineage societies.

While this book cannot address every society, Dr. Nagy provides numerous examples of active lineage societies in Appendix A, with brief descriptions of their membership requirements and contact information. There is also a bibliography of sources.

It is her hope that this book will help the reader learn about the variety of societies in existence and their stated purposes, and that it can demystify them so that more people are encouraged to join the society of their choice.

This volume covers the lineage records of l,500 members new to the Society from 1953 to 1981. Generation by generation, descent is traced from the earliest immigrant ancestor to the l,500 members of the Society who joined between 1953 and 1981, the sole condition of membership in the Society being that the immigrant ancestor must have arrived in the Colonies between 1620 and 1700.

Each of the lineage records contains the names of all ancestors in the direct line of descent from the original immigrant, each with dates of birth, marriage, and death. Readers should be advised that the term “Pilgrim” in the context of this book refers to travelers to all parts of the Colonies, not just New England. For the researcher’s edification, we should mention here that the index contains about 28,000 names!

In these two volumes are the lineage records of 6,800 members of the National Society of the Sons and Daughters of the Pilgrims, all going straight back to the immigrants of the 17th century. Generation by generation, descent is traced from the earliest immigrant ancestor to the present member of the Society, the sole condition of membership being that the ancestor must have arrived in the colonies between 1620 and 1700. Each of the lineage records contains the names of all ancestors in the direct line of descent, each with dates of birth, marriage, and death. The two volumes include the lineages of all members of the Society from 1909, when it was founded, to 1952. Volume I had an imperfect index, but in 1958 a new index was published, and with the permission of the Society we have included this in our reprint. Since Volume II was published without an index, we have supplied a completely new name index. The two indexes contain tens of thousands of references.

Three Hundred Colonial Ancestors and War Service is the product of esteemed genealogist Elizabeth Rixford’s efforts to trace her maternal and paternal lines and the main branches of her husband’s family, namely: Rixford, Hawkins, Wilson, Flint, Cutting, Hinds, Cook, and Cushman. But, as researchers will appreciate, this work is no ordinary family history because in it the Vermont matriarch discloses her four Mayflower lines, two lines to the National Society Founders and Patriots of America, three lines to the Huguenot Society, ten lines to the DAR, three lines to the United States Daughters of 1812, forty-seven lines to the Colonial Daughters of the 17th Century, and 140 supplemental lines to the National Society Daughters of the American Colonists in Vermont. In all, Mrs. Rixford treats nearly 150 different lines touching on more than 5,000 ancestors. Three Hundred Colonial Ancestors and War Service is a work that no student of New England or colonial ancestry should overlook.

Membership in the Colonial Society of Pennsylvania (established in Philadelphia in 1874) is limited to males over the age of twenty-one descended from a male or female who settled in any colony of America (now the United States) prior to the year 1700. Membership in the organization is limited to 300 persons. This volume is essentially an alphabetically arranged list of members of the Society in the year 1950, showing the direct line of descent of each member to his colonial ancestor, the earliest known date of the ancestor’s presence in America, and the year each member was elected to the Society. Preceding the roster of members are various lists of Society by-laws, officers, and committee members, all of which serve to paint a picture of the history of this esteemed organization. At the back of the volume the reader will find an alphabetically arranged index of the pioneer ancestors of the Society.

Researchers hoping to connect to a proven line of colonial ancestry may find what they are looking for in one or more of the following lineages of Society members as of 1950: Acton, Adams, Alexander, Aller, Ambler, Anderson, Argo, Ashbridge, Bainbridge, Barnes, Barnsley, Bartow, Bayne, Beck, Belcher, Bell, Belsterling, Bevan, Bigelow, Black, Bland, Blinn, Boger, Bosler, Bradley, Bridger, Brinton, Brown, Brownback, Buckenham, Bunting, Burpee, Cadwalader, Campbell, Canby, Capp, Carr, Carrigan, Castle, Castner, Chaffe, Clafin, Claghorn, Clark, Clarkson, Clement, Closson, Clothier, Coates, Coleman, Colket, Connell, Cooper, Cope, Corson, Crispin, Coskey, Davis, Day, Dilks, Dobbins, Donaldson, Duff, Dyer, Eisenbrey, Elredge, Elmer, Esler, Eslack, Evans, Ewing, Fell, Fergusson, Fitler, Flagg, Forbes, Fornance, Frazier, Fuller, Funk, Garrett, Gates, Gillingham, Green, Grundy, Guernsey, Haines, Hanna, Hart, Hay, Henderson, Henry, Herkness, Herndon, Hinkson, Hires, Hoffman, Hogeland, Holloway, Hood, Hoopes, Hopkinson, Hopper, Howard, Howard-Smith, Howell, Huey, Hurlburt, Jenkins, Jenks, Johnson, Jones, Jump, Keast, Keffer, Kennard, Kennedy, Klapp, Knight, Knowles, Laing, Landreth, Lay, Leach, Lee, Lengert, Lewis, Ligget, Lloyd, Lott, Lueders, Lutz, McBee, McKean, Mansfield, Maris, Massey, Matthews, Melvin, Middleton, Miller, Mills, Milne, Mirkil, Montgomery, Moore, Morgan, Morris, Morrison, Mustin, Newhall, Newnam, Norris, North, Ogden, Palmer, Parker, Patterson, Pearson, Penrose, Perry, Plowman, Putnam, Rambo, Randolph, Rankin, Reckefus, Reeves, Reifsnyder, Rich, Rue, Rulon-Miller, Runk, Rutter, Sargent, Sayen, Seal, Seeley, Selden, Shelley, Sheppard, Sherron, Shewbrooks, Shoemaker, Shryock, Sickel, Smith, Snow, South, Steere, Stewart, Stockwell, Strassburger, Sturgis, Summers, Sutter, Sutton, Swing, Taylor, Thomas, Van Dyke, Walker, Walton, Warnock, Warriner, Watkins, Weightman, West, Wetherill, White, Wiederseim, Wiener, Williams, Wood, Wurts, Wynn, and Wynne.

This is a richly informative, multi-volume encyclopedia of genealogical reference, the first of its kind produced in America, and it contains the pedigrees of 7,500 persons resident in the United States in the nineteenth century who trace their lineage to a colonial ancestor. Indeed, the Munsells’ stated purpose in compiling the work was to “record for all time many important facts in the history of families which would otherwise be lost.”

Covering the entire United States, and in many cases establishing the pedigree in the male line for six or seven generations, this monumental work is a virtual Who’s Who of the colonial families of America. Data furnished, commencing with the nineteenth-century descendant and working backward to the ancestor of furthest remove, includes name; residence; birthplace; dates of birth, marriage, and death; remarks about occupation, religion, and civic, social, and military achievements; as well as a staggering variety of other genealogical and biographical matter. While much of this information derives from the subject themselves, care was taken by the compilers to confine the sketches to ascertainable facts.

Munsell’s American Ancestry is one of the great foundation stones of genealogy in the United States. Clearfield Company is pleased to make it available to researchers far and wide.

“The undertaking would appear to be a formidable one, and one which requires great pains and diligence to secure the necessary accuracy.” The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, Vol. XIX, No. 4, p. 181.

Each line is carefully documented, generation by generation, and has been verified and approved by Timothy F. Beard, Genealogist General of the Order of the Crown of Charlemagne. Each chapter is headed with the name of the immigrant ancestor through whom the descent is traced, followed by each family name in the line of descent in America. This work also contains a chapter on “Charlemagne and His Children,” by Prof. J. A. Cabannis, and a lengthy survey of contemporary genealogical scholarship by Timothy Beard.
