In 1899 the Society of Mayflower Descendants inaugurated a series of transcriptions of the birth, marriage, and death records in its quarterly, The Mayflower Descendant. Transcribed by quarterly editor and Mayflower scholar George Bowman from the official records of the town clerk, the series continued, irregularly, until 1937, when the periodical was suspended. Many, but not all, of the persons described in the articles were of Mayflower descent.

In 1976, Col. and Mrs. Leonard H. Smith Jr., with the consent of the Society of Mayflower Descendants, published one-volume limited edition reprints of these series from The Mayflower Descendant, adding comprehensive, full-name indexes, as well as chronologies of boundary changes affecting the towns. Each volume (see also Items 9476 and 9477) refers to the birth, marriage or death of thousands of early residents. Since the Smiths’ important contributions to New England ancestry were never widely available, Clearfield Company is delighted to bring them to the attention of the genealogy community.

The town of Little Compton, Rhode Island was founded by a band of explorers from Plymouth Colony. From its inception Little Compton has been a bastion of Mayflower ancestry, including that of the Wilbor family of compiler Benjamin Franklin Wilbour. Mr. Wilbour devoted much of his life to compiling genealogies of his own and other families of Little Compton. This present work, which was assembled from Mr. Wilbour’s notes by Philip B. Simonds and originally published in 1967 by the Little Compton Historical Society, is now available in a fifth edition.

Based upon extensive research in primary sources and featuring numerous illustrations, Little Compton Families is Benjamin Franklin Wilbour’s legacy to the descendants of the following 200 families, many of whom are traced back to the middle of the 17th century: Albert, Allen, Almy, Amory, Astle, Athington, Austin, Bailey, Barker, Beebe, Bennett, Bertram, Billings, Bixby, Blackman, Bliss, Bone, Borden, Bosworth, Brayton, Brennan, Briggs, Brigham, Brightman, Brown, Brownell, Buckley, Bullock, Bundy, Burchard, Burgess, Burleigh, Burlingame, Butler, Butts, Campbell, Canfield, Carr, Carroll, Carter, Carton, Base, Castino, Chase, Church, Clapp, Clark(e), Closson, Cobb, Coe, Coggeshalle, Collins, Cook, Coombs, Cooper, Cordeira, Corey, Cornell, Cowen, Cozzens, Crandall, Crandon, Crosby Crossman, Cuthbert, Davenport, Davis, Davol, DeAzevedo, Dennis, Dimon, Douglas, Dring, Drowne, Durfee, Durkee, Dye, Dyer, Earle, Ellis, Elwell, Elmery, Field, Fisher, Fobes, Foote, Forrester, Fortner, Fowler, Francis, Gibbs, Gifford, Grant, Gray, Grinnell, Groves, Hambly, Hart, Hathaway, Hatton, Head, Heyward, Hickey, Hicks, Hilliard, Horswell, House, Howard, Howland, Hoxie, Hunt, Irish, Jackson, Jameson, Jenney, Jennings, Jewell, Jones, Joy, Kaye, Kelly, Kempton, Kirby, Ladd, Lake, Lavarre, Lawton, Leary, Lemunion, Lewis, Linnekin, Little, Longley, Lynd, McFadden, MacFarland, Magnuski, Manchester, Manley, Manton, Martin, Mias, Moore, Morse, Mosher, Negus, Newton, Ormsby, Pabodie, Paine, Palmer, Pearce, Peckham, Perkins, Phillips, Pope, Potter, Price, Records, Richmond, Robinson, Rouse, Sabins, Salisbury, Sanford, Sawyer, Seabury, Searles, Seibel, Shaley, Shaw, Sheehan, Shepard, Shethar, Sherer, Shrieve, Sherman, Shurtleff, Simmons, Sisson, Slocum, Smith, Snell, Snow, Soule, Southworth, Springer, Staples, Stoddard, Sylvia, Tabor, Tallman, Taylor, Thomas, Thompson, Thurston, Timberlake, Tomlin, Tompkins, Tripp, Veray, Warden, Warren, Watts, West, Whalley, Wheeler, White, Whitney, Wilbor, Wilcox, Wilkie, Williston, Wimer, Winslow, Wood, Woodman, Woodworth, Wordell, and Yettman.

Duxbury was founded by migrants from the town of Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1632. Duxbury’s importance in Mayflower genealogy is irrefutable, and it is underscored by the simple fact that the town was named for Duxbury Hall, the seat of Miles Standish’s ancestral home in England. Justin Winsor’s venerable history of Duxbury commences with chapters on the settlement and incorporation of the town; boundaries, roads and landmarks; first settlers; schools and education; and early contact with the Indian population. Subsequent chapters are concerned with lists of 17th-century town officers, Duxbury in the colonial wars, the American Revolution and the War of 1812, and the history of the Congregational Church in Duxbury. Of greatest interest to researchers, over one-third of the volume is devoted to genealogical notes and sketches of more than 200 early families of Duxbury, including the ones that follow: Alden, Arnold, Baker, Barker, Bartlett, Bisbee, Bishop, Bonney, Bosworth, Bourn, Bradford, Brewster, Briggs, Brown, Bryant, Bumpus, Burgess, Carver, Chandler, Chapman, Church, Clark, Cole, Cullifer, Curtis, Cushing, Cushman, Dawes, Delano, Dingley, Drew, Dwelley, Eaton, Ford, Frazar, Freeman, Glass, Hall, Harlow, Hathaway, Holmes, House, Howard, Howland, Hudson, Hunt, Kein, Lambert, Lazell, Leonard, Loring, Louden, Mitchell, Mullins, Nash, Oldham, Pabodie, Partridge, Peirce, Peterson, Phillips, Prince, Prior, Ripley, Rogers, Sampson, Seabury, Shaw, Simmons, Soule, Southworth, Sprague, Standish, Starr, Sylvester, Thomas, Wadsworth, Weston, Winsor, and Wormall.

This volume contains an authentic history of the Pilgrim Fathers who planted the Colony of Plymouth, from their origin in John Robinson’s congregation in 1602 to his death in 1625-written by themselves. The document of first importance is Gov. Bradford’s History of the Plymouth Colony, which takes precedence over everything else relating to the Pilgrims in time, authority, and interest. It contains a detailed history of their rise in the north of England, their residence in Holland, the causes which led to their emigration, and the means whereby they transported themselves to America. The next document in importance is Bradford’s and Winslow’s Journal, containing a minute diary of events from the arrival of the Mayflower in 1620 to the return of the Fortune in 1621. This document joins on the former, making a continuous narrative. Skipping to the fourth document, Winslow’s Relation entitled “Good News from New England,” the narrative is taken up where it was left off by the former journal, and it is brought down to September, 1623. The remaining documents are Cushman’s Discourse, Winslow’s Brief Narration, Gov. Bradford’s Dialogue, and Gov. Bradford’s Memoir of Elder Brewster, which, like the other documents, constitute a very select body of primary source material.

In these two volumes are the lineage records of 6,800 members of the National Society of the Sons and Daughters of the Pilgrims, all going straight back to the immigrants of the 17th century. Generation by generation, descent is traced from the earliest immigrant ancestor to the present member of the Society, the sole condition of membership being that the ancestor must have arrived in the colonies between 1620 and 1700. Each of the lineage records contains the names of all ancestors in the direct line of descent, each with dates of birth, marriage, and death. The two volumes include the lineages of all members of the Society from 1909, when it was founded, to 1952. Volume I had an imperfect index, but in 1958 a new index was published, and with the permission of the Society we have included this in our reprint. Since Volume II was published without an index, we have supplied a completely new name index. The two indexes contain tens of thousands of references.

Each of the lineage records contains the names of all ancestors in the direct line of descent from the original immigrant, each with dates of birth, marriage, and death. Readers should be advised that the term “Pilgrim” in the context of this book refers to travelers to all parts of the Colonies, not just New England. For the researcher’s edification, we should mention here that the index contains about 28,000 names!

The town of Wareham, Massachusetts, situated directly south of Plymouth Town (in Plymouth County), was created in 1739 from the town of Rochester, directly to the west. Wareham would become home to countless persons of Mayflower descent. The records of the First Church of Wareham are a crucial source of information for Mayflower ancestry, and they comprise the basis for this book. The surviving church records are a mixture of births, marriages, deaths, memberships, and other records. In all, the Smiths refer to nearly 6,000 early settlers of Wareham, whose names are accessible to the researcher in the index at the back of the volume.
