This is a skillfully written book that describes the basic rules and grammar of heraldry observed in designing a heraldic device. As it is quite impossible for the genealogist to interpret a blazon or to design a coat of arms without full mastery of heraldic rules and grammar, this book provides all the information necessary for the prosecution of either task.

Carefully explaining the unique rules and language of heraldry, and illustrating each point with a remarkable series of pen drawings, the book aims to give the genealogist and the student of design sufficient information about the structure and detail of heraldic insignia to enable him to produce well-balanced designs of coats of arms.

In addition to its usefulness as a manual, this is the kind of book that many will enjoy for the color and romance of heraldic history; e.g., the stories behind the great symbols of chivalry and the explanation of the uses of heraldry in architecture and other forms of embellishment. It is an unquestionable necessity for anyone forming a heraldic library.

“Without a doubt this is the finest book to have been published for many years, and one which will become the vade mecum of anyone in any way connected with heraldry in its various forms.”–Museum News (Sept. 1967).

In 1891, John Bernard Burke published a single volume covering the lineages of many of the leading colonial families of Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the West Indies, South Africa, and other parts of the British Empire. Researchers should note that among the Canadian families covered are a number of American Loyalist families, including the Stocktons of New Jersey, Macnab and Robinson of Virginia, Bayard of New York, and Coffin and Jones of Massachusetts. In 1895, the Burkes published a second volume of colonial lineages prepared by John Bernard Burke and edited by Ashworth P. Burke. The two volumes are reprinted here as one, complete with 120 coats of arms and an index of names and addresses of all persons referred to in the pedigrees, under the title A Genealogical and Heraldic History of the Colonial Gentry.

Perhaps the supreme reference work in British heraldry, this is a reprint of the last published edition of 1884. It was hailed as a monument by leading authorities at the time of publication, and it has never yet been superseded. The range of this definitive work is encyclopedic. It contains approximately 70,000 descriptions of coats of arms of British families listed alphabetically by the owner’s surname, with some families listed by location where it is necessary to distinguish between those bearing the same family names. In addition, there is an extensive list of mottoes, a glossary, a dictionary of heraldic terms, and lists of the Royal Armory and Orders of Knighthood, the last four illustrated. The General Armory is a necessity for every heraldic artist and designer, as well as for those wishing to trace their own coat-armor.

“This is regarded by the genealogical and heraldic researcher as one of the greatest works of the Burke series. . . . The book contains the most comprehensive collection of arms, 60,000 having been taken from all the leading sources . . . it is the finest source available and it is the most used book in any genealogical and heraldic reference collection.”–Library Journal (October 1962).

With these have been incorporated additional names and blazons in the so-called Heraldic Rolls or Lists. In addition to the Roll authority for each, the given name as well as the surname of its original holder is given.

The Order of Americans of Armorial Ancestry is the only lineage organization based on the right to bear arms as a qualification for membership. The arms to which each Order member’s most recent American ancestor was entitled, through either his/her paternal or maternal ancestry, is the basis for this publication. First comes the lineages of the more than 700 members admitted to the order since its inception, arranged in order of membership. The lineages are followed by a section of 300 black-and-white coats of arms (complete with descriptions of colors, etc.). Preceding the arms themselves is a very helpful glossary of heraldic terms. At the back of the volume, the compiler has assembled two indexes: a name index to the nearly 20,000 persons identified in the lineages, and another to the arms, which arranges all the bearers in alphabetical order.

For the period up to and including the early 19th century, The Commoners is the standard genealogical guide to families in Great Britain and Ireland who enjoyed territorial possession or official rank, but were uninvested with heritable honors. In the narrative style so characteristic of Burke formulations, the contemporary representative of the family is introduced with an illustration of his arms, a brief statement regarding his parentage and present position, the names and dates of birth of his wife and children, and such incidental information as might be helpful to the reader. There then follows his lineage, commencing with the earliest ancestor of record and proceeding in a straight line of descent through successive generations, enumerating births, marriages, and deaths and other details relevant to the pedigree. The four volumes together comprise something on the order of 2,000 pedigrees. Each volume is separately indexed, the aggregate total of names running in excess of 50,000.

This is a classic work on American heraldry, a careful elucidation of practice and principles. With chapters on virtually every aspect of heraldry, and with more than 950 illustrations in support of the text, it may be observed without risk of overstatement that the book is practically definitive. Consideration is given to flags, seals, coins, shields, crests, achievements, charges, badges, mottoes, and supporters, and to cadency, marshalling, and blazoning. There is even a helpful chapter on French and German heraldry and a fifty-page glossary of terms.
